A last-minute goal isn’t enough. RWE fritter away a 1-0 lead at Erzgebirge Aue at the start of the year and lose 1-2.
The year 2024 couldn’t have started much better for Rot-Weiss Essen.
RWE took a 1-0 lead away at Erzgebirge Aue after just 58 seconds of play. But in the end, Christoph Dabrowski’s team left empty-handed.
Cedric Harenbrock made an artistic pass, Leonardo Vonic powered through and set up Isaiah Young, who coolly slotted the ball home from eleven meters out to make it 1-1: the successful and impressive start visibly gave the guests in Aue a confidence boost.
RWE looked wide awake, keen to play and always looking to get forward. Most involved: Vonic, who started in attack for the injured Ron Berlinski and missed the 2-0 after five minutes.
But soon the initial euphoria was dampened. Aue recovered, grew stronger and stronger and began to test the Essen defense, in which Mustafa Kourouma replaced the suspended Felix Götze. Marcel Bär had the best chance, but his header was saved by Jakob Golz (28′). Shortly after, Marwin Stefaniak narrowly missed (29′).
RWE was now mainly occupied with defensive tasks in a fast-paced third division game and should not have complained about the equalizer – Bär, for example, missed the equalizer by a centimeter shortly before half-time after a corner. At the same time, the guests also left some promising counterattacking situations unused.
The second half had barely kicked off when the players on the pitch had to take a break again. RWE fans had started a fire – the thick smoke from the guest block led to a four-minute interruption.
This hardly harmed the entertaining game – and certainly not the Esseners. They became significantly more active after the break, started earlier and found gaps. Vonic was twice beset in the highest need (55th, 57th). RWE pushed forward and were caught on the counter. Omar Sijarić advanced down the right and passed to Bär, who scored from a few meters out to make it 1:1 (61′).

The goal gave Aue new momentum – Maximilian Thiel went flat from a few meters out, beating Golz. RWE were now biding their time, looking to counter. Substitute Thomas Eisfeld was unlucky to see his shot from eleven meters hit his own man (76′). Andreas Wiegel shot wide from a tight angle (83′).
The final phase was evenly poised again. But frantic: the already shaky Vinko Sapina made a momentous error in injury time while building up. The ball ended up with Mirnes Pepic, who converted it to make it 2:1 – the final score.
On Tuesday at 7 p.m., RWE will have the chance to make amends when Viktoria Cologne visits.
