Late blow – BVB suffers defeat against Villarreal

Borussia Dortmund’s U19 team suffered their second defeat in the Youth League. BVB lost 1-2 (0-1) to Villarreal CF in the dying moments of the game.

Borussia Dortmund’s U19 team suffered a narrow defeat in the Youth League on Tuesday afternoon. Coach Felix Hirschnagl’s team lost 2-1 (0-1) to Villarreal CF.

After falling behind early (0-1 in the 9th minute), Paul Tanyi scored for BVB in the 73rd minute after a cross from Nick Cherny to make it 1-1 – but the visitors made it 2-1 in the 88th minute.

The visitors from Spain got off to a better start in Brackel and took an early lead. Dortmund lost the ball in the opponent’s half and Villarreal switched gears at lightning speed. After a cross from the right side of the attack, Hugo Lopez beat Paul Tanyi at the near post and slotted home to make it 0-1 (9th minute).

Overall, however, the Black and Yellows rarely found a way through the solid Spanish defense. One of the best chances fell to Mathis Albert, whose shot flew just wide of the goal after dribbling in from the left (25′). At the other end, Dortmund goalkeeper Aaron Held deflected a powerful shot from Lopez over the goal (28′).

Although Dortmund dominated the game after the break, they rarely managed to create dangerous scoring opportunities. At the start of the final phase, BVB finally had something to cheer about. Nick Cherny served the ball into the center, where it slipped through and landed at Paul Tanyi, who slotted it in at the far post to make it 1-1 (73′).

Cherny almost took the lead from distance, but his powerful shot flew just past the right post (81′). Shortly afterwards, Etcibasi missed the goal by a whisker with his shot from a tight angle (83′).

But instead of Dortmund taking a deserved lead, they were suddenly knocked out: Unai Rodriguez initiated the attack himself with a high pass to Moussa Traore, which Borussia claimed was offside. Traore laid the ball back from the baseline to the center, where Rodriguez slotted it low through Held’s legs to make it 1-2 (88′).

“Looking at the game as a whole after 90 minutes, I would say that we did everything better than our opponents except for the result,” summarized Dortmund coach Hirschnagl. “The defeat is bitter, but I can’t blame the boys. In the first half, you have to work your way into the game, and that’s why things got better and better in the second half.”

After their second defeat in the current competition, the Black & Yellows are now in eleventh place in the table after the fifth match day. Next Sunday (12 noon), they continue with an away game in the DFB Youth League at SV Wehen Wiesbaden.
