Rot-Weiss Essen had to concede a win late at FC Ingolstadt for the fifth time this season. A look at the statistics shows: RWE often rings the bell in the final quarter of an hour.
Manuel Schäffler (89th minute / Dynamo Dresden), Tobias Bech (84th / 88th / FC Ingolstadt), Nicolas Sessa (90th / SC Verl), Moritz Stoppelkamp (88th / MSV Duisburg) and Jalen Hawkins (90th / FC Ingolstadt).
Five players who have one thing in common. With their late goals, they robbed Rot-Weiss Essen of what they thought was a safe three points in the 3rd Division.
Now RWE is not the first and not the last team to concede an important goal late on. But with a view to the past, the feeling remains that the Essen team likes to be off the mark in the last few minutes.
That’s why we dared to take a look at the statistics of the current season. And it is indeed the case that Essen are right up there when it comes to goals after the 75th minute.
Only two teams have swallowed more goals towards the end of a match. FSV Zwickau and, surprisingly, promotion contender SV Wehen Wiesbaden.
Dynamo Dresden and FC Ingolstadt in particular know how to win games safely or at least not let anything go wrong at the end. Both conceded only three goals after the 75th minute, FCI among others on Saturday against RWE.
MSV is also stable towards the end – the Zebras conceded five goals in the final quarter of an hour. At RWE, there is always talk of a learning process when it comes to conceding late goals, of a lack of cleverness. But the fact is that the season is coming to an end and there is not much time left to learn.
