Leipzig and Bayer 04 confident, Cologne knocks out first division team

Leverkusen, Leipzig, and Stuttgart cleared their hurdles in the second round of the cup. Cologne knocked out a Bundesliga newcomer, while Regensburg showed its cup form.

On Tuesday evening (October 29), eight matches in the second round of the DFB Cup were on the schedule. FC Schalke were away to Bundesliga side FC Augsburg and were knocked out after a 3-0 defeat. The same fate befell BVB, who lost 1-0 to VfL Wolfsburg after extra time.

In the clash between two first division sides, RB Leipzig prevailed 4-2 (3-1) against FC St. Pauli. Yussuf Poulsen (12th/30th), Christoph Baumgartner (17th) and substitute Antonio Nusa (80th) scored the goals for the 2022 and 2023 cup winners, who now have momentum and, above all, fresh legs going into Saturday’s league clash with BVB (6:30 p.m.). Morgan Guilavogui (28th minute) and Eric Smith (59th minute) scored for the visitors.

Defending champions Bayer Leverkusen comfortably booked their place in the round of 16. Coach Xabi Alonso’s team had no trouble beating second division side SV Elversberg 3-0 (3-0) in front of their home crowd. Striker Patrik Schick quickly put Leverkusen on the road to victory with an early brace (2nd, 9th). Spain’s Aleix Garcia sealed the final score with a free kick before the break (36th).

For Kickers Offenbach, the last remaining fourth-division team, the cup run came to an end after a 0-2 defeat against second-division side Karlsruher SC.

Stuttgart advances despite wrong decision, celebrations in Cologne and Regensburg

VfB Stuttgart remains in all three competitions despite a wrong decision. The Swabians advanced to the round of 16 with a 2-1 (1-1) win over last year’s cup finalists 1. FC Kaiserslautern. Nick Woltemade put VfB ahead in the 14th minute, but Boris Tomiak equalized from the penalty spot in the 43rd minute after Marlon Ritter was brought down by Fabian Rieder, albeit outside the box. Chris Führich scored the winning goal in the 75th minute.

Two days after head coach Joe Enochs was sacked, Jahn Regensburg caused an upset by winning their second division clash against SpVgg Greuther Fürth 1-0 (0-0). Interim coach Andreas Patz celebrated his first victory since the 1-0 home win against VfL Bochum in the first round of the cup. Rasim Bulic scored the winning goal (59th minute), but was sent off shortly afterwards (63rd minute).

Crisis-stricken 1. FC Köln caused a surprise by knocking Bundesliga side Holstein Kiel out of the competition. The relegated team, which is struggling in the 2nd division, won a very tough game 3-0 (1-0) and advanced to the round of 16 for the first time in three years. Tim Lemperle (8th minute) and Luca Waldschmidt, who scored twice (84th minute, 90+7th minute), scored the goals.
