Leverkusen, Leipzig and Stuttgart made it through to the second round of the cup. Cologne knocked out a Bundesliga promoted team, Regensburg showed its cup face.
On Tuesday evening (October 29), eight matches of the second round of the DFB Cup were on the program. FC Schalke was a guest at Bundesliga club FC Augsburg and had to strike after a 0-3 defeat. The same fate befell BVB, who lost 0-1 to VfL Wolfsburg after extra time.
In the clash between two first division teams, RB Leipzig beat FC St. Pauli 4-2 (3-1). Yussuf Poulsen (12th/30th), Christoph Baumgartner (17th) and substitute Antonio Nusa (80th) scored for the 2022 and 2023 cup winners, who will take a tailwind and, above all, fresh strength with them into the league summit at BVB on Saturday (6:30 p.m.). Morgan Guilavogui (28th) and Eric Smith (59th) scored for the guests.
Defending champion Bayer Leverkusen has confidently booked its ticket to the last 16. Coach Xabi Alonso’s team won comfortably 3-0 (3-0) at home against second division side SV Elversberg. Striker Patrik Schick quickly put Leverkusen on the road to victory with an early brace (2nd, 9th). The Spaniard Aleix Garcia scored the final goal before half-time (36th) with a free kick.
Kickers Offenbach, the last remaining fourth division club, saw their cup run end after a 2-0 defeat against second division club Karlsruher SC.
Stuttgart advance despite wrong decision, Cologne and Regensburg celebrate
VfB Stuttgart are still in the running for all three competitions despite a wrong decision. The Swabians advanced to the round of 16 with a 2-1 (1-1) win over last year’s cup finalists 1. FC Kaiserslautern. Nick Woltemade put VfB in the lead (14th), Boris Tomiak equalized from the penalty spot before half-time (43rd), after Marlon Ritter was brought down by Fabian Rieder – albeit outside the box. Chris Führich scored the winning goal (75th).
Two days after the dismissal of head coach Joe Enochs, Jahn Regensburg caused an upset by beating SpVgg Greuther Fürth 1-0 (0-0) in the second division. Interim coach Andreas Patz celebrated the first win since the 1-0 home win against VfL Bochum in the first round of the cup. Rasim Bulic scored the golden goal (59th minute), but was shown the red card shortly afterwards (63rd minute).
The crisis-ridden 1. FC Cologne surprisingly knocked out Bundesliga club Holstein Kiel. The relegated team, which is having serious problems in the second division, won 3-0 (1-0) in a very tough game and advanced to the round of 16 for the first time in three years. Tim Lemperle (8th minute) and Luca Waldschmidt, who scored twice (84th and 90th + 7 minutes), scored the goals.
