Leipzig confident – Dortmund with luck and Hummels

BVB also struggles at SC Freiburg, but Mats Hummels can be relied on. Cup winners RB Leipzig, on the other hand, decided their game in the first half hour.

Mats Hummels saved Borussia Dortmund from another setback in the Bundesliga. The centre-back scored late in the 4:2 (1:2) win at SC Freiburg and secured the team’s second win of the season.

Cup winners RB Leipzig reduced the gap to league leaders Bayer Leverkusen and FC Bayern to one point with a 3-0 (3:0) win over FC Augsburg and lead a chasing quartet.

VfB Stuttgart with their 3:1 (0:0) at FSV Mainz 05, TSG Hoffenheim with their 3:1 (2:0) at 1. FC Köln and VfL Wolfsburg with their 2:1 (2:1) against 1. FC Union Berlin also have nine points. Dortmund follows with eight points.

Hummels (11th) gave BVB the lead after a corner. Dortmund were then clearly superior. However, Lucas Höler (45.+2) and Nicolas Höfler (45.+6) made the fans of the hosts cheer again just before the half-time whistle. Donyell Malen (60th) brought BVB back into the game. Höfler was shown the red card late on after a foul (81.). Again Hummels (88.) with a lucky goal in the penalty area and also Marco Reus (90.+2) ensured the late victory.

For Leipzig, Dutch newcomer Xavi Simons (7th) was successful early on with a header. Loïs Openda, who provided the assist, scored himself a little later in the twelfth minute. David Raum (27th) gave RB a very reassuring lead after less than half an hour.

Goal scorer Jonas Wind (12th) scored his fifth goal of the season for Wolfsburg. Robin Gosens (28th) equalised for Union in the meantime, but Joakim Maehle (30th) put the hosts back in the lead.

Hoffenheim’s Andrej Kramarić was the early spoiler in Cologne at the 100th anniversary celebration of the stadium in the Müngersdorf district. The Croatian scored after 50 seconds. Florian Grillitsch (28th) took spectacular advantage of a mistake by Cologne goalkeeper Marvin Schwäbe and scored with a shot from the halfway line – from 55.6 metres, according to pay-TV channel Sky. Maximilian Beier (52nd) followed up in the second half. Davie Selke (61st) scored for Cologne. FC professional Rasmus Carstensen was shown the yellow card (90.+1).

In Mainz, both teams struggled for a long time, but Serhou Guirassy (56.) was successful for the visitors. Mainz celebrated the equaliser through Leandro Barreiro (70.), before Guirassy was successful again (84. and 90.+7). FSV remain second last.
