Lewejohann upset – late mistake costs point

On the twelfth matchday of the Regionalliga West, KFC Uerdingen was away to Borussia Mönchengladbach’s U23 team. A late misplaced pass ultimately cost KFC a deserved point.

KFC Uerdingen lost 0-1 to Borussia Mönchengladbach’s U23 team on the twelfth matchday of the Regionalliga West. As a result, coach René Lewejohann’s team missed out on a chance to move up the table for the time being.

Before the match against Borussia’s second team, Uerdingen were in seventh place with 16 points. KFC had been unbeaten in their last three games. But despite their run of success, it was clear that the clash against the young Foals would be a tough test. Borussia were in fourth place with 21 points going into the match.

Borussia’s second team has technically skilled players, which is typical for U23 teams. This is one of the reasons why Gladbach has the second-best offense in the league. But Lewejohann has a recipe for success against these teams. They earned a point against 1. FC Köln’s second team and even beat Paderborn’s second team. Lewejohann: “Men’s football wins against good, attractive youth football.”

That wasn’t the case against the Foals, but Uerdingen still put in a courageous and committed performance over 90 minutes. The 40-year-old agreed: “We played bravely, we didn’t hide. That’s exactly how I want our team to play.”

I’m very emotional and need to calm down. But that was bitter and really annoys me.

In the end, however, this performance was not rewarded. For Lewejohann, it was an undeserved defeat: “I hardly saw Gladbach at all throughout the game. Apart from one shot that hit the crossbar and one or two moves in the penalty area, we defended perfectly.”

The decisive goal was not the result of a well-worked move either. A serious misplaced pass by center back Joyce Tshitoku led to the late defeat. With no pressure from an opponent, Tshitoku played the ball into the feet of Borussia striker Noah Pesch. Lewejohann: “A real capital error. It upsets me all the more because we had specifically addressed this in the dressing room. I told him beforehand to kick the ball forward first. It’s annoying that he then played it in there so unnecessarily.”
