Marcus Uhlig – “We are not resisting success in Essen”

Before the game between Rot-Weiss Essen and Hallescher FC, RWE boss Marcus Uhlig answered questions from “Magenta Sport”. He also talked about promotion and a striker.

The fact that the game between Rot-Weiss Essen and Halleschen FC kicked off despite the continuous rain was endorsed by the Essen officials.

“We already have a catch-up game against 1860 Munich. Besides, from a financial point of view, it would also be a loss. After all, the game has already been organized,” said RWE coach Christoph Dabrowski on “Magenta Sport” before the kick-off.

RWE boss Marcus Uhlig also advocated referee Martin Speckner giving the game the green light. “It’s a bit of Hafenstrasse weather, Hafenstrasse football atmosphere. We’ve already had a lively exchange with the referee and he said it was okay. We had a similar game last season against Freiburg II, which we won 2-0. Maybe the weather is a good omen for RWE – I hope so.”

A win would give Rot-Weiss Essen 33 points and allow them to dream of the 2nd Bundesliga at Christmas. Even Uhlig doesn’t want to forbid the fans from dreaming, even if he prefers to be understated: “We will certainly look back on 2023 as a difficult year. We panted across the finish line in the summer and managed to avoid relegation. But we performed well this season – both in terms of points scored and style of play.”

The fact is that we, like all teams, keep our eyes and ears open. We can’t say now that we’ll do something in the winter. We’ll see.

With a glance at the table, he added: “We have always emphasized how close this league is. We are not resisting success in Essen. We are just collecting all the points we can get – like squirrels. We didn’t want to have anything to do with relegation and we are on the right track. We’ll see what else is possible.”

And then, of course, there is the obligatory question that has been around for weeks about a possible new striker in the upcoming transfer window.

Uhlig: “The fact is that, like all teams, we keep our eyes and ears open. We can’t say now that we’ll do something in the winter. We’ll see. I don’t think this discussion is entirely correct either. I don’t want to say that we’re dissatisfied with our offense. We’ve scored goals well.” After all, the table doesn’t lie – even without an accurate striker.
