Marius Müller has had a strong season in goal for FC Schalke 04. Mentally, however, it was a challenge for him and S04.
FC Schalke 04 has kept its place in the league, with the season finale at Greuther Fürth coming up on Sunday (3.30 pm). This also marks the end of an emotional rollercoaster ride for the S04 professionals. They were in the bottom of the table for a long time and the pressure from fans and the media was immense. “I won’t manage a season like that again,” says Schalke goalkeeper Marius Müller. “I don’t have that much energy.”
In the program “At Broski – Die Sport-Show”, the 30-year-old goalkeeper spoke about the sporting and mentally challenging chaotic season at Schalke. “It was a very exhausting season – on and off the pitch,” Müller said in an interview with host Gamerbrother.
“We had to keep putting out a lot of small fires and keep a lot away from the young players. There were many nights when we older players spent long hours on the phone thinking about what we could do differently to achieve maximum success.”
Müller was brought to Schalke last summer for 350,000 euros from Swiss first division club FC Luzern, where he was supposed to be a challenger to Ralf Fährmann. However, Müller started the season as number one, partly due to Fährmann’s injury, and impressed – even when he temporarily lost his starting place after his injury, he fought his way back.
The responsibility of putting one of Germany’s biggest clubs in existential fear – that was really tough. I’m glad that we managed to avoid relegation against Osnabrück.

“The responsibility of putting one of the biggest clubs in Germany in existential fear – that was really tough. I’m glad that we managed to avoid relegation against Osnabrück,” said Müller, who saw the victory in the ghost game at St. Pauli as a “conciliatory end to a shitty season”, from which the club must now “draw the right conclusions. Schalke belong in the Bundesliga, we don’t need to talk about it.”
Müller also talked about his own future. At least a little. “I’m mega happy at Schalke,” said the man who, as the best goalkeeper in the 2nd division, has certainly attracted the interest of other clubs. His contract is still valid until 2025, but “Schalke is my first port of call,” Müller revealed, “talks have already started.”
