Marvin Obuz introduces himself – this is how the new winger ticks

Three-league club Rot-Weiss Essen is preparing for the upcoming season at the training camp in Wesendorf. Among them: Marvin Obuz.

Since 7 July 2023, Marvin Obuz has officially been part of Rot-Weiss Essen’s third division squad.

The offensive player was loaned to RWE for the coming season by Bundesliga team 1. FC Köln. He has already been allowed to play one half against each of the underclass teams ETB Schwarz-Weiß Essen (5:2) and FC Gütersloh (3:1), and since Monday Obuz has been at the training camp in Wesendorf with the Rot-Weiss.

“I have been very well received and feel totally at home in the team. I would say that I am a very positive and open person. I never respond to things that are negative and always try to get the best possible out of every situation. Now I want to continue to step on the gas in the training camp. Personally, I’m happy that we still have two test matches (Wednesday against Ottensen and Saturday against Braunschweig, editor’s note). Of course, that’s always the most fun,” explained the Cologne native in an interview with Forecasting.

Speaking of Cologne: Obuz was trained at 1. FC Köln from the age of 8 and celebrated great successes in his youth. He became German champion with the U17s and West German champion with the U19s. During his U17 time, the 21-year-old also played with the best teammate of his career so far. “You can say that quite simply: Florian Wirtz,” Obuz emphasised.

After the successful youth period, Obuz gained his first experience in senior football in the Regionalliga West with the reserve team of 1. FC Köln. There, the winger scored 16 goals in 48 games. In April 2021, he then signed his first professional contract with the Bundesliga club as a 19-year-old. At the start of the 2022/23 season, Obuz was then loaned out to second-division club Holstein Kiel.

There, the Cologne-born player “only” made ten league appearances, but nevertheless, he says that this year did him good: “The year definitely brought me forward. I didn’t get the appearances in Kiel that I had hoped for, but I still matured a lot and got a much clearer head. I am convinced that this will also be seen on the pitch. Both those responsible at 1. FC Köln and I personally felt that another loan deal made the most sense. I am totally convinced of the move to Essen. “

Every player has his own goals, but the team always comes first. Of course, as an offensive player I want to score a lot of points, but if we are successful as a team, then every individual is successful too. Now I just want to go all out. I’m really excited about the coming season.

The year in Kiel is over, now Obuz’s complete focus is on the season with Rot-Weiss Essen. The 1.82-metre man is looking forward to the challenge and wants to contribute his individual strengths to the team: “I think I can help the team with my pace dribbling, switching game and will. Every player has his own goals, but the team always comes first. Of course, as an offensive player I want to score a lot of points, but if we are successful as a team, then every individual is successful. Now I just want to go all out. I’m really up for the coming season.”

Obuz is also really keen on the home games. So far, the left winger has only been to the RWE Stadium once. In December 2020, he conceded a 3-1 defeat in Essen with the U21s of 1. FC Köln – albeit in front of empty stands at the time. The former German junior international is all the more looking forward to the games at a packed Hafenstraße: “The anticipation is huge. Of course I’m waiting for that moment. That’s what football is for. “
