Match abandoned in Essen’s top match – what the coaches say

In the Bezirksliga Group 7, the derby between Vogelheimer SV and Blau-Gelb Überruhr had to be abandoned. RevierSport spoke to both coaches.

The Essen Bezirksliga top match between Vogelheimer SV (32 points) and Blau-Gelb Überruhr (29 points) was eagerly awaited. From the beginning, the match at Vogelheimer Lichtenhorst was a hard-fought affair in which the home side got off to the better start.

Hasan Beganovic converted a corner directly into the goal in the early stages (12th minute) and put his team in the lead. Ten minutes before the end of the second half, goal scorer Timo Wolter increased the lead to 2:0 for VSV after a counterattack.

In the second half, the visitors pushed for a goal, but failed again and again due to the compact defence of the opponents and their own lack of chances. A quarter of an hour before the final whistle, the top game had to be abandoned.

The reason: there was a scuffle on the sidelines between the coaches’ benches, and spectators had also entered the pitch without permission. The referee therefore considered the regular continuation of the match to be in jeopardy and decided to abandon the game.

RevierSport asked both coaches about the abandonment of the match:

Christian Mikolajczak (coach Vogelheimer SV): “I don’t really want to comment on the situation. I think it’s very sad that a top match in the district league ended like that. It had nothing to do with football. I don’t want to and can’t say anything more about it. As far as the sporting side is concerned: we played a great game and up to that point we were leading 2-0, which was well deserved. What my team is currently delivering is really great sport.”

Murat Aksoy (Coach Blau-Gelb Überruhr): “It was actually a relatively fair game. After tempers got a bit heated during a situation in the second half, a Vogelheim steward went for my player Leonard Scheer’s neck and threatened him. This is all visible on Soccerwatch. After that, the situation escalated a bit and spectators also came onto the pitch. The referee then stopped the game. I find that disastrous and I am ashamed of such behaviour. As a steward, you are actually responsible for safety on the sports field. It is a real pity that the match had to be abandoned. This should not happen! I will express my opinion at the panel meeting. “
