Rot-Weiss Essen showed the appropriate reaction to the last two defeats and won in Dortmund with 2:1 (1:0). Matchwinner was Torben Müsel.
What a victory for Rot-Weiss Essen! Supported by almost 10,000 RWE fans, the third-division club celebrated a 2-1 win at Borussia Dortmund’s U23.
Mustafa Kourouma (30th) and Torben Müsel (58th) were the scorers for the Essen team, while Falko Michel (56th) scored the Dortmund equalizer via penalty kick.
Due to the last two clear defeats, RWE was required to show a reaction – and the team delivered. In terms of play and, above all, fighting spirit, the visitors were much improved compared to the 5-0 defeat against SC Verl.
Match-winner Müsel was delighted, and expressed his relief in the interview: “Brumme was outstanding in the 2:1 and then had his head up after I made the run deep. All in all, it was a solid game from us, but I still think that we allowed too much here and there. Overall, we showed a completely different face than in the last two games. Everyone wanted to take home the three points, which is how it should really be every week.”
Scoring the winning goal in front of a packed visitors’ corner was a very special moment for Müsel. “I was extremely happy about it, of course. But I would have been just as happy if another player had scored the winning goal. The most important thing is simply the three points,” stressed the 24-year-old.
When you review the season so far, you quickly come to the conclusion that RWE shows its best performances in the highlight matches like against Münster, Dresden or just now in Dortmund. “It seems like that’s the only way we know how to do it,” Müsel explained with a grin.
That was kind of crazy. Personally, it pushed me, I thought it was really awesome. We can only thank every single fan. Without the fans, RWE wouldn’t be what RWE is.
Torben Müsel.
The midfielder continued, “Of course we want to win every game, whether it’s against Dresden, Unterhaching or Verl. Unfortunately, we didn’t perform that well against the teams that don’t have that big name, but basically, of course, we want to win every game.”
Müsel was particularly impressed by the support of the Essen fans who came along – especially in the current situation: “When we arrived with the bus, we were already cheered, and that after the last two games. That was kind of crazy. Personally, it pushed me, I thought it was really awesome. We can only thank every single fan. Without the fans, RWE wouldn’t be what RWE is. “
