Mathias Lierhaus on team trips – “Mintarder times were really crazy”

Mathias Lierhaus celebrated his greatest successes in the jersey of Blau-Weiß Mintard. He now plays for SuS Haarzopf and answers the forecasting questionnaire.

Mathias Lierhaus is now 34 years old and once scored goals in the DJK Blau-Weiß Mintard jersey.

After almost 14 years, the striker moved from Mintard to Spielvereinigung Schonnebeck in January 2022. But he was not happy in the Oberliga. After just half a year, he moved from Schetters Busch to Föhrenweg to SuS Haarzopf. At the district league club, Lierhaus works together with Marco Guglielmi, as he did in Mintard, and is happy again.

Mathias Lierhaus answers our forecasting questionnaire.

My greatest strength is… we’re talking about soccer, right (laughs)? Then my goal scoring instinct.

My biggest weakness is… staying focused.

In our dressing room… we get along just fine!

The best moment of my football career was… winning against Steele with Mintard. That was in 2019, I think. We were promoted to the state league in front of 700 spectators.

The most beautiful goal of my career was… in that game against Steele. It was the 1-0 in the 70th minute, a directly converted free kick. We won 2-0 and I scored the second goal. It was an awesome game in front of this impressive crowd.

My best teammate was… Marco Brings. I had a lot of good teammates, also in Schonnebeck, but I just get along best with Marco – on and off the pitch.

My best coach was Marco Guglielmi, because… we have a lot in common. We were promoted twice and worked together in Mintard, and he is now also my coach in Haarzopf. He just knows what makes me tick.

My worst trainer was… I would have an answer ready. But I’m not that mean. I’ll keep that to myself.

When I was a little boy, my role model was… Fredi Bobic and later Mario Gomez. I’m a Stuttgart fan, after all.

I didn’t become a professional footballer because… I had a completely flawed attitude. Every now and then, there were inquiries from NLZs and also from the regional league. I also played in the Niederrheinliga throughout my youth, was in the Niederrheinauswahl, but I never tried it in a NLZ.

The best thing about the Ruhr area are… the people.

Either, or?

Dortmund or Schalke? VfB Stuttgart.

Beer or water? Beer.

Club or pub? Pub.

Natural or artificial turf? Natural grass.

Warrior or artist? Neither.

Cinema or Netflix? Netflix.

Football on TV or in the stadium? Both. If I can make it, I’ll go to the stadium.

Finally, a few more questions:

Who would you like to have a beer with? I would love to have a chat with Toni Kroos. I really enjoy his “Einfach mal Luppen” podcast.

Which club did you experience the most extreme team trip with – and why? The Mintard trips were pretty extreme. There were always around 50 of us, including fans, support staff and guys from the second and third teams. The team spirit was unique.

What makes you laugh? I love laughing at jokes.

What was your best vacation? The skiing vacation in Austria in 2019.

What is indispensable for you? My family.

What kind of music do you like to listen to and what do you play in the changing room? I do indeed like to listen to rap and electro. Both are played in the changing room.

If you could start over, what would you do differently in your life? I should have positioned myself differently from my studies and studied something else. From an athletic point of view, I should have had the courage to try out for a youth training center.
