Record international soccer player Lothar Matthäus does not think it makes sense for Borussia Dortmund to extend the contract of captain Marco Reus again.
“I see people at Dortmund who can play Reus’ position,” the 62-year-old said on Sky90, explaining, “A Julian Brandt showed up when Reus was injured. On top of that, they have Karim Adeyemi. They have great players in the offense who can definitely replace Reus as well.”
Reus’ contract at BVB is only valid until the end of this season. The now 33-year-old has played for the current league runners-up from Westphalia since July 2012. Reus was substituted for Brandt in last Friday’s 3-3 draw against VfB Stuttgart. Most recently, Bild reported that a contract extension for Reus for another year was just a formality.
“Reus is not getting any better, the injuries will continue and he is of course getting older,” Sky pundit Matthäus stressed. “If you no longer trust Marco Reus one hundred percent, then you should find a reasonable solution that is good for both sides. After all, Reus is already no longer an untouchable regular as captain. “
