On the first matchday of the Regionalliga West, Wuppertaler SV surprisingly suffered a bitter 1:2 defeat against Rot Weiss Ahlen.
Wuppertaler SV is obviously one of the top teams in the Regionalliga West. Many observers even believe that head coach Björn Mehnert’s team will be promoted to the 3rd Division. It was therefore all the more surprising that WSV lost their opening match against Rot Weiss Ahlen 1:2 (1:0).

From the WSV’s point of view, everything had started so well. In the first half, the Wuppertal team took the lead through a rehearsed corner kick. After half-time, however, the visitors from Ahlen took control and turned the game around with goals from Cihan Özkara and Christian Skoda. The second goal came courtesy of WSV keeper Sebastian Patzler. Patzler made a crucial mistake when the visitors scored the second goal.
This was a deserved defeat
Björn Mehnert
At the press conference afterwards, Wuppertal’s head coach Mehnert appeared to be a fair loser: “That was a deserved defeat. We knew that an aggressive team awaited us. Ahlen switched well between high and deep pressing. We were well adjusted to it and I didn’t necessarily see many chances on either side.” Mehnert continued: “If we make it 2-0, then we will win a game like that. However, you also have to say quite clearly that it was too little from our side to win this football match. “
In the same breath, Mehnert announced his intention to work intensively on his team’s weak points in the coming week. “We have a lot to work on. That was simply too little in terms of the basics. We lacked the absolute spirit and gall to win the game in this stadium and in front of these spectators,” said the coach in reference to the game.
Ahlen coach Zimmermann: “Got our horsepower on the carpet “
On the other hand, Ahlen’s head coach Andreas Zimmermann was satisfied with the outcome of the match. According to the coach, his team had not expected much against WSV in advance. The joy was all the greater that Ahlen were able to take away an important three points from Wuppertal.
“It’s always nice to come here and play in this great stadium. Even though I wasn’t happy with the match schedule beforehand and we trained accordingly, it’s the form on the day that counts in the end. Against Wuppertal, we had that good form on the day and we got our hp on the carpet. I was thrilled with how we performed in parts and I am proud of my team. In the next few weeks we want to take the next step,” said Zimmermann.
In the coming week, WSV will travel to SG Wattenscheid 09, while Rot Weiss Ahlen will play Fortuna Köln on the next matchday.
