Meunier convincing for Belgium, Bellingham in frustration

For most BVB professionals, the international break has been disappointing so far, as they lost and sometimes played little. One, however, was convincing.

For Nico Schlotterbeck and Niklas Süle, Friday evening was a disappointment: The two Borussia Dortmund pros lost 0:1 (0:1) with the German national team against the outsiders Hungary – which means that the desired group victory in the Nations League is already out of reach. While Süle spent the entire match on the pitch and did reasonably well, Schlotterbeck was left out. In the upcoming match against England on Monday (8.45 p.m./RTL), however, a place in the starting eleven beckons for him – because defender Antonio Rüdiger is suspended with a yellow card.

Jude Bellingham also experienced a failure with the English national team: In the second match of the German group, the runners-up England lost 0:1 (0:0) to the European champions Italy. This seals England’s relegation from League A after two draws and three defeats already after five of six match days. Bellingham played through and set up a good Harry Kane chance – but ultimately could not prevent the defeat.

Thomas Meunier sets up Belgium’s goals

Things went much better for the Belgians in the service of BVB – at least for Thomas Meunier. In the 2:1 (2:0) win against Wales, the right-back played through and initiated both goals with precise passes. His Dortmund team-mate Thorgan Hazard, on the other hand, did not even make it into the matchday squad. With the win, the Belgians kept alive their chance to win the group against the Netherlands on the last matchday.
