Fortuna Köln suffered a defeat during the match-free week. At the Dürener Westkampfbahn, Fortuna lost 0:3 to 1. FC Düren.
The Regionalliga West is also match-free this international weekend, with only four teams in action in the matches SC Paderborn II – Wuppertaler SV and SSVg Velbert – FC Gütersloh (Saturday, 9 September, 2 pm).
This break was used by two clubs, 1. FC Düren and Fortuna Köln, to test against each other. At the Dürener Westkampfbahn, the hosts kept the upper hand in the end and won 3:0 (0:0) against the Cologne team.
The goals after the change of ends were scored by test player Hendrik Hansen (62nd), Mustapha Chahrour (79th) and Dennis Brock (86th) via penalty kick. The most famous face, however, was to be seen in the jersey of the guests.
Anthony Modeste, formerly of 1. FC Köln and under contract with Borussia Dortmund until 30 June, was in Fortuna’s starting eleven. And the now 35-year-old attacker played 90 minutes, missing a goal-scoring opportunity immediately before the second goal in Düren.
Göcer gets injured and has to come off
“Tony has been training with us for some time. He asked if there was a possibility to play. There was now, because two strikers, Danny Breitfelder and Tim Birkenheuer, were absent at short notice. So he didn’t take playing time away from any of the other attackers,” Fortuna coach Markus von Ahlen explained Modeste’s deployment on the Cologne website.
The deployment of the 209-time Bundesliga player did not help. In addition to the defeat, Fortuna also had to accept the injury of Serkan Göcer, who had to leave the field already in the opening phase.
“The test was about giving all players as much playing time as possible. The goals we conceded were all absolutely unnecessary. I’m generally not happy if we don’t win. The game showed it only works when we perform as a unit on the pitch,” said von Ahlen.
In league play, Fortuna Köln are guests at Rot-Weiß Oberhausen on matchday 7, while 1. FC Düren have to go to SC Wiedenbrück. Both games will kick off on Saturday, 16 September, at 2 p.m.
