With over 300 appearances, Mehmet Kara is Preußen Münster’s record player. Starting next summer, he will take over a coaching position for the first time.
Long-time professional footballer Mehmet Kara is currently winding down his career in the Bezirksliga. The 39-year-old plays for VfL Kamen, has already scored 16 times this season and is fighting for promotion in the Westfalen-Staffel 7.
Regardless of whether the team eventually makes the leap to the Landesliga, one thing is already certain: Kara will end his active career next summer – and instead work as a coach for the Kamen team. The midfielder is already gaining experience. He coaches the A-juniors of the VfL.
Since the current coaches of the district league team, Sebastian Laub and Emre Aktas, had announced their resignation at the end of the current season, the way was cleared for Kara. He signed a three-year contract with the ambitious club from the Unna district.
Kara already announced coaching career
Kara had already announced to RS more than two and a half years ago that he would like to move to the sidelines after his playing days. “I know almost all the leagues in Germany, I’ve played in every division from Kreisliga to 2. Bundesliga and I’ve also scored. That definitely helps when it comes to understanding players and motivating them properly,” he said at the time.
And that is true: Kara worked his way up from the low amateur level to the top level in his career. Among other things, he collected ten appearances in the Turkish Süper Lig and played 31 times in the 2nd Bundesliga with SC Paderborn.
Kara spent the longest period of his career with Preußen Münster. With 302 competitive games played, he is still the record player for the Eagles. Next summer, a new chapter will begin – as coach of VfL Kamen.
