FC Bayern is out. It was a bitter evening for Jamal Musiala. But he did not want to be consoled by Christian Streich.
It was a used evening for Jamal Musiala, substituted, causing the decisive handball penalty. As a result, SC Freiburg won 2:1 at FC Bayern in the DFB Cup quarter-finals. Bayern was knocked out. After the final whistle, Christian Streich wanted to shake Musiala’s hand in consolation. But Musiala, as the TV cameras caught, refused the handshake and pushed past Freiburg’s coach. And a debate began in the world of the internet as to whether this was unsporting behaviour.
In any case, Streich scolded afterwards, which the cameras also showed; in the end, however, this incident will not have bothered him any further. Because his Freiburg team won in Munich for the first time, the fourth-placed team in the Bundesliga is in the Cup semi-finals. “I’ve lost so many times in Munich now. It should be granted to us now that we win once – in 15 years or so,” explained Christian Streich. And: “We defended passionately, and we also defended well. We had liberations over the right side again and again. It was a nice evening, but you don’t need to overrate it either.”
And Jamal Musiala? Bayern defender Matthijs de Ligt took him to task for his clumsily caused handball penalty. “Jamal is not a defender. I’m sure Jamal will learn from this.” He was “mega disappointed”, Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel said, “but why should I be angry? We got two goals with two long-range shots, otherwise I can’t remember any chances. In the end, it’s our own fault, we know that. We win together and we lose together.”
Bayern’s season remains a shaky one. FC Bayern’s remarkable 4-2 win over Borussia Dortmund was followed by another setback. The Munich side now take on Freiburg this weekend, a rematch of sorts. Perhaps Jamal Musiala and Christian Streich will find each other after all.
