Second division club Fortuna Düsseldorf has strengthened its attack. A striker with international experience is joining the team.
Fortuna Düsseldorf has signed another center forward in Žan Celar. The Slovenian is on loan from Queens Park Rangers in the English second division and will wear the number 9 jersey for the German second division club. There is also an option to buy. The 17-time Slovenian international is a classic center forward. In the summer of 2024, he moved to Queens Park Rangers in London. However, due to injury, Celar has only made 24 competitive appearances for the club, scoring two goals.
His time at FC Lugano was much more successful. The 1.86-meter-tall Celar scored 40 goals in 95 league games and was the top scorer in the Swiss Super League in the 2023/24 season. Celar was trained by his home club NK Maribor and AS Roma. He made a brief appearance in Serie A for the Italian club. He then gained further experience in the Italian second division with AS Cittadella. Klaus Allofs, Executive Board Member for Sport and Communication, said: “We have been closely monitoring Žan Celar since his successful spell in Switzerland. We are now delighted to have successfully filled the last vacancy in our offense with him. With Zan, Cedric Itten, and Danny Schmidt, we believe we are very well positioned in attack for the future.“
Christian Weber, sporting director at Düsseldorf, added: ”In Žan, we have signed another classic number nine who regularly scored in double figures during his time in Switzerland. He has excellent finishing skills, but also likes to lurk on the edge of the offside line to get behind the defense on the counterattack. Even though he had a bit of a slump last season, we are very confident that he will regain his old form with us.”
Žan Celar on his move: “I’m very happy to be here at Fortuna and can’t wait to finally get started. I want to help the team and the whole club achieve its sporting goals. I’ve heard a lot about Fortuna and am looking forward to my first game in front of a full stadium on Saturday.”
