What a crazy turnaround for Rot-Weiss Essen. It was just 22 days ago when the mood in the 3rd division threatened to tip over after the disastrous 5-0 defeat to SC Verl at Hafenstraße and the preceding 4-0 loss at newly promoted Unterhaching.
This was followed by the departure of captain Felix Bastians, where it was clear that the club was taking a risk with the decision, and it has been rewarded so far.
Because now, three weeks and three victories later, the fans are up in arms, nobody is talking about Bastians anymore and the team has picked up nine points, including two derby victories away from home at BVB II and MSV. Almost 17,000 Essen fans accompanied the team to the two away games.
And all of a sudden RWE is in fourth place in the third division and there are certainly one or two people who have already picked out the relegation dates after the season against the third-last team in Bundesliga 2 for all eventualities.
