There were actually four games still to be played in the Regionalliga West this year. One of them has now been canceled for the second time.
The schedule of Rot Weiss Ahlen and FC Schalke 04 U23 will be a little fuller than planned in 2024. The catch-up match from matchday 17, which was originally scheduled for Wednesday, can once again not take place. “We have to inform you that the catch-up match against FC Schalke U23 scheduled for next Wednesday has been canceled again. Despite all our efforts, the pitch is still unplayable,” the Ahlen team announced on Monday.
The match was already scheduled to take place on November 25, but the city closed the pitch at the Wersestadion due to the weather conditions. It is now clear that it will still not be possible to play in Ahlen two and a half weeks later.
This means that Ahlen will have to play two catch-up games next year. After all, the home match against SV Rödinghausen on match day 18 was also called off due to the unplayability of the pitch and has not yet been rescheduled.
However, the rescheduling has one positive side effect for RWA: the 15th-placed team in the table will go into the winter break with a sense of achievement behind them. On Sunday, Ahlen confirmed the upward trend under Björn Joppe and showed a reaction to the 3-1 defeat against Gladbach’s U23s. They went on to win 2:0 against the U23s of 1. FC Köln. Joppe had already celebrated victories over the top teams from Düren (3:1) and Wuppertal (2:1) after taking office.
Schalke were also successful last weekend, recording an unchallenged 3-0 win over 1. FC Düren. The miners are therefore safe in eighth place in the table going into the winter break.
However, three more catch-up games are still to be played in the Regionalliga West this year. An overview:
