Third division side Rot-Weiss Essen celebrated their fifth win in a row against SV Waldhof Mannheim. Marvin Obuz was once again one of the match-winners.
He scores and scores and scores: Marvin Obuz scored for the third game in a row for Rot-Weiss Essen against SV Waldhof Mannheim on Sunday.
After a perfect one-two with Cedric Harenbrock, the scorer of the 1:0, Obuz scored in the 73rd minute to make the final score 2:0.
“I just went for it and didn’t even think about it. We just want to win every game and always give 100 percent right to the end. We act as a team. That’s what sets us apart,” emphasized Obuz during the subsequent interview in the catacombs. The 21-year-old is currently in impressive form and is the difference-maker in Essen’s offense.
Eleven minutes earlier, however, the Cologne-born player was in a different mood. He was denied a penalty that he had taken himself by visitors’ keeper Lucien Hawryluk. It would have been 1:0. But Obuz was not deterred by this miss. He kept at it and was rewarded with his fourth goal of the season.
The winger also received praise from coach Christoph Dabrowski for his reaction: “That speaks volumes for Marvin Obuz that he doesn’t let his wings down, but instead continues to provoke the opposition and then rewards himself with a fantastic goal. “
I was annoyed, of course, but it was clear to me that I just wanted to score another goal. That was the only thing that was still in my head.
Marvin Obuz on his missed penalty
About his missed penalty, Obuz said: “Of course I was annoyed, but it was clear to me that I just wanted to score another goal. That was the only thing that was still in my head. “
RWE’s top scorer (4 goals, 3 assists) did not want to focus on his own performance, but was particularly pleased with the improved performance in the second half. In the previous home games against Saarbrücken and Bielefeld (both 2:1), RWE were clearly better in the first 30 minutes, but now the third-placed team in the table really turned up the heat after the break.
“In the first half, we lacked the drive to score. That was definitely better in the second half. The coach told us at half-time that we simply had to believe in ourselves more and have the desire to score. We then took our chances to score,” explained Obuz.
