Alemannia Aachen is making a big push in squad planning for the 2023/2024 season. Player number ten is signed and sealed.
Robin Afamefuna has signed a contract with Alemannia Aachen.
The Würselen native, who is versatile defensively, moves to the Tivoli from Rot-Weiß Koblenz.
“Robin is a well-trained player who has also gained experience in another country in the USA. There, particular emphasis is placed on the athleticism of the players, which still characterises Robin today. After his time in the USA, however, he also found his feet again in the Regionalliga, was an undisputed regular first in Bonn and now in Koblenz, and has also been captain since the winter. Accordingly, we are happy to have a player who can be used flexibly and whose character and mentality make him a great fit for the club,” said Sascha Eller, Alemannia’s managing director, about the new addition.
Afamefuna spent his youth in the imperial city with Alemannia up to the B Juniors. He eventually moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach for the U17s before making his way to the USA after the A-youth. In college, he is not only doing a Bachelor of Arts, he also played football for the Virginia Cavaliers at the University of Virginia. He narrowly lost on penalties in the finals of the 2020 statewide college championship, and the now 26-year-old also served as team captain for two years.
Following four years in college football, he was one of a handful of foreign players selected in the MLS SuperDraft as the 37th pick in the 2nd round by the Colorado Rapids. After graduating from college and playing in the MLS, the highest football league in the USA, he returned to Germany – first to Bonner SC, where he made 35 appearances last season.
After Bonner’s relegation, he moved to Rot-Weiß Koblenz in the Regionalliga Südwest, where he was named team captain after six months. In Koblenz, he has played in 23 games so far, scoring two goals of his own.
“I am very happy to return to my home country and to see familiar faces in and around the club again on a regular basis. The club’s goals overlap a lot with my personal goals, which is why I didn’t have to think long about a move to Alemannia. I want to do everything I can on and off the pitch to achieve these goals and help lead the club back to where it belongs,” said Afamefuna, full of anticipation.
