Next RWE opponent knocked out on penalty kicks – Düsseldorf advances

That was a close call. But in the end, second division team Hamburger SV prevailed over third division team Arminia Bielefeld on penalty kicks.

Hamburger SV has reached the last sixteen of the DFB Cup. The second division giants beat the third division team of Arminia Bielefeld 4-3 on penalties.

After 90 minutes and extra time, the score was 1-1 (1-0). Matheo Raab saved the decisive penalty kick against Marius Wörl.

Nicklas Shipnoski (11th minute) scored early for Arminia, who knocked Bundesliga club VfL Bochum out of the competition in the first round. But HSV equalized through substitute Bakery Jatta (77th minute) and reached extra time. This was kicked off ten minutes late due to a medical emergency in the stands.

Bielefeld put up a spirited defensive fight after conceding in the clash between the two summer relegation losers.

The Hamburg visitors kept on coming and creating chance after chance – but Bielefeld goalkeeper Jonas Kersken kept a clean sheet for a long time.

It was only when HSV coach Tim Walter brought on his initially rested offensive players Robert Glatzel and Jatta in the final phase that the guests broke through the defense. Jatta scored with a header two minutes after coming on. In the final phase, both teams played an open game with chances on both sides.

In the first round, HSV had won 4-3 at Rot-Weiss Essen. Now the Hanseatic team has knocked out the second traditional club from the 3rd division. Speaking of RWE: Arminia Bielefeld will continue in the Westschlager at Rot-Weiss Essen on Saturday.

“Overall, that was a well-deserved victory for HSV, even if it was decided by a penalty shootout. But the team gave it their all and fought to the end,” said Arminia coach Mitch Kniat, adding in an interview on Sky: ‘We have the youngest team in the league and these young guys have strength. I’m not worried about Saturday. We will deliver the same performance in Essen.’
