In the 3rd division, VfB Oldenburg were unable to get past RWE ahead of their clash with Rot-Weiss Essen. This is because they suffered a 0:1 (0:0) defeat at SC Freiburg II.
Next Sunday (6 November, 1 p.m.), VfB Oldenburg will face Rot-Weiss Essen at home in a duel for the promoted team. With a win at SC Freiburg II on Sunday, VfB could have overtaken Essen.
But things turned out differently, the game ended 1:0 for the Freiburg team, who thus climbed to third place for the time being.
The start on Sunday belonged to Freiburg, who dominated immediately, VfB only reacted. The first chance came after 18 minutes. But Vincent Vermeij missed the great opportunity to take an early lead.
The next excitement came after 30 minutes. Because a drinking break at the end of October due to the high temperatures – that should be a rare occurrence. Even after that, nothing changed. Freiburg pressed, Oldenburg stood compactly, and accordingly there were no goals until the break.
After the change, the game continued in a similar vein, which also meant that there were very few scoring opportunities. Freiburg was more active, but the last pass did not arrive.
In the 64th minute, however, the superiority was rewarded. Kamer Krasniqi tripped Freiburg’s professional loanee Roland Sallai. Vermeij converted the resulting penalty to take the lead.
The reaction of the guests? It didn’t come, Oldenburg lacked a lot offensively on this day, nevertheless it remained exciting, because the Freiburgers missed the decision. And then there was a scene where VfB could have equalised. But Yannik Engelhardt saved the three points for SCF by clearing the ball off the line.
As already mentioned, VfB’s next match is against RWE, while Freiburg play Dynamo Dresden on Saturday (5 November, 2 p.m.).
