Next setback – meniscus surgery for Alaa Bakir

Last year, Alaa Bakir missed a large part of the season with a meniscus tear. Now he has to have meniscus surgery again and is missing from MSV Duisburg.

Alaa Bakir came to MSV Duisburg from Borussia Dortmund II in 2021 with high hopes. Born in Münster, he had previously worked his way up through the youth teams to the second team with strong performances and also played a major role in the 2020/21 season in the championship and the third division promotion of the Dortmund U23s with four goals and twelve assists in 39 Regionalliga appearances.

He then decided to make the leap to the “Zebras”. However, Bakir has repeatedly had to struggle with setbacks there. While the 22-year-old collected 35 appearances, five goals and seven assists in his debut season at the Wedaustadion in all competitions, he was only granted 15 games (two goals, three assists) last year. He missed a large part of the season with a torn meniscus and subsequent persistent knee problems.

After six third-division appearances and two games in the Lower Rhine Cup at the beginning of the current season (without a point), the next serious setback now follows. The man with Jordanian roots missed Saturday’s game against Rot-Weiss Essen (1-2) due to knee problems. However, further examinations have now revealed that Bakir needs to undergo meniscus surgery. The club announced this on Tuesday, October 31. The MSV did not initially provide any information on the exact length of time Bakir would be out for.

Pusch is missing due to gastrointestinal complaints

However, the attacking midfielder is not the only one that Boris Schommers had to do without at the start of the training week on Tuesday. Niklas Kölle (shoulder injury), Dennis Smarsch (patella tendon problems), Marvin Bakalorz (ankle problems), Pascal Köpke and Tim Köther (both knee problems) were also unable to participate. In addition, Kolja Pusch had to pass due to gastrointestinal problems.

The next league game for the Zebras is on Sunday (1:30 p.m.). Then Boris Schommers will take the next shot at his first points as MSV coach with Waldhof Mannheim.
