Rot-Weiß Oberhausen has not yet signed a player in this winter transfer window. But after Leroy Mickels, the second player is already moving abroad.
Rot-Weiß Oberhausen is slowly turning out to be a small seller’s club. After Leroy Mickels, Michael Wentzel is also being sold. This is what RevierSport has learned.
According to the report, after Mickels, who moved to Bulgaria for around 20,000 euros, Wentzel will also be going abroad. The central defender will undergo a medical check in the USA this Monday – 23 January.
More precisely, at the MLS club St. Louis City SC. The parties have agreed not to disclose the transfer fee that the North Americans will pay to Oberhausen. But the fact is: RWO has collected money for both Mickels and Wentzel in this transfer window.
The 20-year-old Wentzel, who had been under contract with RWO since the end of August 2022, was a regular at Oberhausen. He formed the centre-back duo with Nico Klaß and appeared in 14 games (one goal), 13 of them from the start, for the Kleeblätter.
Now St. Louis sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel lured Wentzel, who was born and raised in the USA, back to the United States.
After Paul Voß (coach at Borussia Dortmund’s youth management centre), Adam Lenges (1. FC Köln II), Justin Heekeren (FC Schalke 04) and Tim Stappmann (1. FC Magdeburg), Leroy Mickels (Spartak Varna) and Michael Wentzel (St. Louis) are the RWO players number five and six who have left the regional league club from Oberhausen for a professional club within just twelve months and earned Rot-Weiß a transfer fee.
