No injury for Wittek – Zeidler’s take on the Cologne test

VfL Bochum continues to wait for a win. After a string of defeats in the Bundesliga, they also lost against Cologne. Here’s how the coach saw the 90 minutes.

Bundesliga club VfL Bochum lost 2-3 in a test match against second division side 1. FC Köln. Moritz Kwarteng scored the equalizer for VfL to make it 1-1, and Moritz Broschinski put his side ahead shortly after the break. The final goal came in the last move of the game, with keeper Timo Horn, who had made several brilliant saves earlier on, looking unhappy.

After the game, former Cologne player Horn summed up: “That’s annoying. We played well and could have scored more goals. Everyone got a chance to show what they can do, so despite the defeat, it was a good test that gives us confidence for the coming weeks. The ball came in well for the 2-3, it was difficult to get out. Then I tried to get my hand on the ball in the scramble.”

That didn’t happen, so there was no success to celebrate, not even a partial victory. VfL captain Anthony Losilla summed up: “Unfortunately, it was another game we didn’t win. A victory would have done us good. But there were also a few good things.”

What was bad: Maximilian Wittek had to go off injured after nine minutes following the 0-1. There was suspicion of a broken toe. Fortunately, this was not confirmed.

What VfL coach Peter Zeidler would not like. He said of the 90 minutes against FC: “I think it was a test match for 60 minutes, after that it was more of a friendly. The last 30 minutes gave a lot of young players the opportunity to show themselves, so it wasn’t really a test anymore. I didn’t like that so much. We wanted to win, but we shouldn’t make too much of the 2-3 defeat.”

His team played well for a long time, with two shots hitting the woodwork, which was unfortunate for Bochum. After several substitutions, the 2-3 came in stoppage time. Zeidler: “I also saw a few interesting things, with many players playing in positions they haven’t played in before.” cb / gp
