Rot-Weiß Oberhausen has reached the quarter-finals of the Niederrhein Cup. The regional league team won 1-0 (0-0) away against the fifth division team VfB Homberg.
The fifth quarter-finalist in the Niederrheinpokal has been determined: on Tuesday evening, the regional league team Rot-Weiß Oberhausen beat the fifth division team VfB Homberg 1-0 (0-0). The only goal of the game was scored by Denis Donkor (57′).
MSV Duisburg (3-0 against SSVg Velbert), Rot-Weiss Essen (2-0 against VfB Hilden), SV Sonsbeck (3-1 against TVD Velbert) and Union Nettetal (8-6 on penalties against TSV Meerbusch) had already advanced to the last eight before that.
The spectators in Duisburg-Homberg saw a tight game in the first 45 minutes, with both sides putting in some intense challenges. Oberhausen had more possession and tried to find a way through the VfB defense. Apart from a few half-chances after long-range shots or set pieces, however, coach Sebastian Gunkel’s side didn’t manage much in the first half. Tarsis Bonga came closest to scoring when he shot from a free-kick in the six-yard box and only just missed the target (44′).
However, the best opportunity in the first half fell to the hosts, who were in the lower division: Justin Walker left Nico Klass and Denis Donkor standing on the touchline in the 23rd minute and served Julian Bode in the middle, who powerfully hammered on the housing. RWO keeper Kevin Kratzsch prevented the clover leaves from falling behind with a brilliant save.
Even after the break, the team of head coach Stefan Janßen initially put up a good fight and showed full commitment. But in the 57th minute, the clover leaves broke the spell: Eric Gueye arrived at the ball on the left in the sixteenths and played it to the second post, where Donkor was waiting and pushed it in to make it 0-1.
The high pace that the Hombergers had set so far was noticeable, and their strength was waning. The opening goal gave RWO security and control. However, the Oberhausen team often acted too hectically in the final third, and offensive actions became rarer on both sides.
Homberg fought back once more, but the clovers also survived two free kicks from good positions and several corner kicks in the four-minute stoppage time and celebrated their entry into the quarterfinals.
Both teams will be back in the league on Saturday (October 19). RWO will host SC Wiedenbrück (2 p.m.), while VfB Homberg will face SSVg Velbert (6 p.m.).
