No surprises – RWO defeats a valiantly fighting VfB Homberg

Rot-Weiß Oberhausen is in the quarterfinals of the Lower Rhine Cup. The regional league team won 1-0 (0-0) away against Oberliga team VfB Homberg.

The fifth quarter-finalist in the Niederrhein Cup has been decided: on Tuesday evening, regional league team Rot-Weiß Oberhausen prevailed 1-0 (0-0) against Oberliga team VfB Homberg. Denis Donkor scored the goal of the evening in the 57th minute.

MSV Duisburg (3-0 against SSVg Velbert), Rot-Weiss Essen (2-0 against VfB Hilden), SV Sonsbeck (3-1 against TVD Velbert) and Union Nettetal (8-6 on penalties against TSV Meerbusch) had already advanced to the quarter-finals.

The spectators in Duisburg-Homberg saw an evenly matched contest in the first 45 minutes with intense battles on both sides. Oberhausen had more possession and tried to find a way through the VfB defense. However, apart from a few half-chances from long-range shots or set pieces, coach Sebastian Gunkel’s team did not create much in the first half. Tarsis Bonga came closest to scoring when he shot from five meters out after a free kick and narrowly missed the goal (44).

However, the best chance of the first half fell to the lower-ranked hosts: Justin Walker left Nico Klaß and Denis Donkor standing on the sideline in the 23rd minute and played the ball into the middle to Julian Bode, who fired a powerful shot at goal. RWO keeper Kevin Kratzsch prevented the Kleeblätter from falling behind with a brilliant save.

After the break, head coach Stefan Janßen’s team initially held their own and showed great commitment. But in the 57th minute, the Kleeblätter broke the deadlock: Eric Gueye got the ball on the left side of the box and played it to the far post, where Donkor was waiting to slot home and make it 0-1.

The high tempo that Homberg had set up to that point was taking its toll, and their energy was waning. The opening goal gave RWO confidence and control. However, Oberhausen often looked too hectic in the final third, and offensive action became less frequent on both sides.

Homberg rallied once more, but the Kleeblätter survived two free kicks from good positions and several corners in the four minutes of added time to celebrate their place in the quarter-finals.

On Saturday (October 19), both teams will return to league action. RWO will host SC Wiedenbrück (2 p.m.), while VfB Homberg will face SSVg Velbert (6 p.m.).
