There was a lot of frustration at Borussia Dortmund II after the 2-1 home defeat to Rot-Weiss Essen on Friday night.
Many games of Borussia Dortmund’s second team dream of one day playing in the Bundesliga. On Friday evening, the general conditions were also right: The stadium, the pitch and the backdrop. The only thing that wasn’t right was the performance.
In front of 17,000 spectators, a record for BVB II, Jan Zimmermann’s team suffered a 1:2 defeat against Rot-Weiss Essen at Signal-Iduna-Park. The coach was furious. Why?
“We lost,” he said dryly on Magenta Sport, but then went into analysis: “The first half we were not present at all, not good in the duels and not in the game at all. Then we come into the game well in the second half and give it away.”
His main problem? “In the third division, the games are close and this was close. I don’t think enough players reached their performance limits that night that it could have been enough for a point or more. I think with a good performance we could have gotten at least a point. That’s why I’m unhappy, because we didn’t put in a good performance. “
In the second half, BVB showed much more momentum in the final third. However, without the injured Paul-Philipp Besong (two goals, three assists) as well as Justin Butler, who had to be substituted, the final punch was missing. Zimmermann: “In the second half we had many promising situations, which we did not play well and purposefully to the end. It’s not enough to say Besong and Butler are out. There are many who have the right to play for us. I expected more.
It doesn’t get any better than this. Super stadium, super fans. Ultimately, the nice feeling after the game is when you also win
Patrick Goebel
Patrick Göbel, who was busy on his right, could understand his coach’s frustration. “I think it’s clear what was missing. These are basics with which you win games,” said the 30-year-old veteran, stressing, “If we had put on the 90 minutes, we would have come off the pitch as winners. We absolutely have to reproach ourselves for that as a team. We prepared all week and didn’t get it done.”
And so he and his teammates couldn’t be happy about the great conditions either. “It doesn’t get any more beautiful than this. Super stadium, super fans. At the end of the day, the nice feeling after the game is when you win, too,” Göbel lamented, adding, “I think everyone will go home, sleep badly and wonder why and why not. We could have put that aside if we had been there at 7 p.m.”
BVB II remained winless for the third game in a row. An away trip to SV Waldhof Mannheim follows next week. “I think the coaching team and will all tackle together why that failed and do better on Friday.”
This time in a real third league stadium.
