Borussia Dortmund has signed a new striker in Niclas Füllkrug. He joins BVB from Werder Bremen.
One day before the transfer deadline, Borussia Dortmund has found the striker they were looking for. Niclas Füllkrug is moving from Werder Bremen to BVB. The 30-year-old international signed a three-year contract. According to media reports, the transfer fee is around 15 million euros.
The background to the signing: Borussia wanted to broaden its range of attackers. Apart from Sebastien Haller, who has been a regular starter, the squad has so far included a second trained centre-forward, Youssoufa Moukoko. And Haller will miss BVB for a few weeks in the winter, provided he takes part in the Africa Cup with the Ivory Coast.
“Niclas has proven his scoring prowess over the years and won the goalscorer’s crown last season,” sporting director Sebastian Kehl is quoted as saying in a statement from the Revierklub. With 16 goals for Bremen, Füllkrug shared first place in the scoring charts with Christopher Nkunku.
Kehl continued: “Thanks to his strong performances, he is rightly an important pillar in the national team’s forward line. Niclas is an attacker who plays along, very strong on the header, physically present, he is convincing in one-on-one duels and is unpleasant for his opponent in one-on-one battles. With all these skills, he embodies the profile we were looking for. “
With his move to Dortmund, Füllkrug will play for a top club for the first time in the future. The Hannover native spent most of his career at Werder. He was also under contract with Greuther Fürth, 1. FC Nürnberg and Hannover 96.
Füllkrug brings with him the recommendation of 47 second league goals (135 appearances) and 44 Bundesliga goals (128 appearances). He would like to further increase this quota in the black and yellow jersey. “I was really happy about the offer, because the step to this club is exactly what I wanted. At BVB, I have the chance to develop as a player and gain new experience,” he said.
