Fortuna Düsseldorf have extended their next contract. This time it is a continuation of the cooperation with a member of the coaching staff.
Following the contract renewal of striker Jona Niemiec – RevierSport reported – Fortuna Düsseldorf have extended the working paper with goalkeeping coach Christoph Semmler. The 43-year-old will continue to be responsible for the goalkeepers of the Red-Whites in the future.
Semmler joined Fortuna in January 2020. The former goalkeeper will also be part of head coach Daniel Thioune’s coaching team in the future. Just like Thioune, as well as the two co-coaches Jan Hoepner and Manfred Stefes, Semmler has extended his contract until 30 June 2025.
Christian Weber, Düsseldorf’s sports director, explains: “The cooperation with Christoph Semmler has also proven its worth within the newly formed coaching team around Daniel Thioune. We are very satisfied with the performance development of our goalkeepers, so we are looking forward to further years with our goalkeeping coach. We are convinced that consistency in our entire coaching team is the right move for Fortuna.”
Semmler kept goal for Rot-Weiß Oberhausen for five years between 2005 and 2010 and played 99 competitive games for RWO. The Wilhelmshaven native, who played for Holstein Kiel in his youth, was also under contract as a professional with Borussia Mönchengladbach II, Schwarz-Weiß Essen, Rheydter SV, Belenenses Lissabon and Wuppertaler SV, where he also ended his active career in July 2013.
After that, Semmler immediately moved on: as goalkeeper coach at Borussia Mönchengladbach’s U23 and then, from 1 July 2018, as goalkeeper coach in Belgium at KAS Eupen. He has now been working for Fortuna Düsseldorf since January 2020.
