Cup party on the Kiez: FC St. Pauli reached the last 16 of the DFB Cup in extra time.
The second division leaders defeated Schalke 04 2:1 (1:1, 0:1) after extra time at their Millerntor home thanks to a significant improvement in performance and inflicted the next setback on relegated Bundesliga side FC Schalke 04.
Marcin Kaminski (16′) put the visitors ahead and initially gave the Royal Blues hope of a second win under new coach Karel Geraerts.
However, Marcel Hartel (57) equalized with a penalty before Johannes Eggestein (102) scored an absolutely deserved winner. Hamburg thus reached the round of 16 for the second time in the last 18 years.
Schalke, on the other hand, finished in the second round, as in the last two seasons – and deservedly so. Three days after the liberation in the league (3:2 against Hannover 96), the visitors came under increasing pressure in the second half despite leading at half-time.
While St. Pauli kept their cool with the self-confidence of eleven unbeaten games in the league and appeared more dominant with every minute, Schalke became more and more entrenched – and consequently conceded the late knockout.
