Pache reveals – What’s behind SG Wattenscheid 09’s winning streak

SG Wattenscheid 09 is marching through the Oberliga Westfalen with five wins in a row. The second-placed team is also well prepared for the upcoming midweek fixtures.

Eight games have been played in the Oberliga Westfalen and SG Wattenscheid 09’s record so far is impressive: undefeated, second in the table, only three goals conceded and a total of six clean sheets. Now two exhausting weeks with five games are just around the corner. Coach Christopher Pache believes his team is well prepared for this.

The traditional club will continue on Sunday, October 12, at 3 p.m., when they host TSG Sprockhövel at their home stadium, Lohrheidestadion. Pache is naturally satisfied with how the season is going so far: “Five wins in a row is great, you don’t just get those easily. We’re happy about it and the guys can be confident, but we still have to stay focused. Every game is a new game.”

The defense stands out in particular, but the coach knows that the season is not a sure thing and that they have to keep working hard. In addition, he attaches great importance to the team performing as a unit. “Both offense and defense are extremely important, but the focus is on the collective. Nothing is more important than the team, and they’re doing extremely well at the moment. That’s a huge achievement, and they can be proud of it. But we still need to continue to strengthen our defense,” explains Pache.

This team structure also sets the team apart in competitive situations, as the coach explains: “Of course, there are disappointments, and it’s legitimate to express them. But it’s all within healthy limits. The atmosphere among the players is intact. If it weren’t, we wouldn’t be able to be so successful.“

Another important factor in the team’s current success is the depth of the squad. In order to maintain this, the focus is deliberately on sufficient recovery, as the 09 coach reports: ”We pay close attention to load management and sufficient regeneration. Because when it comes to muscle injuries, prevention is key.”

And that will be extremely important in the coming weeks, because the league game at the weekend will be followed by the Westphalia Cup game against league rivals SV Westfalia Rhynern on Thursday, October 16, at 7:30 p.m. However, no focus has been placed on this match yet. “We haven’t dealt with it at all yet. First, we have to do our job in the league, then we’ll prepare for the cup,” says Pache.
