Paderborn back at the top of the second division – Düsseldorf climb to 4th place

Thanks to their home strength, Paderborn remain at the top of the 2. Liga table. Hamburger SV has to make way. The Lower Saxony derby ended without a winner, as did the Southwest duel.

SC Paderborn has ousted Hamburger SV from the top of the 2nd Bundesliga table after one night. The East Westphalians won 3-0 (1-0) against Jahn Regensburg on Saturday, who have now been winless for six games, and remain top of the table after the eighth matchday. Third on 15 points for the time being is 1. FC Heidenheim after a 0-0 draw at Karlsruher SC. The Lower Saxony derby between Hannover 96 and Eintracht Braunschweig ended 1-1 (0-0). HSV had won 3-2 in Kiel on Friday.

Braunschweig, who were promoted, ended Hannover 96’s winning streak and had even taken the lead through Anthony Ujah in the 69th minute. However, Havard Nielsen equalised in the 77th minute for the favourites, who had previously won four times. Fireworks in the Braunschweig fan block had caused a brief interruption after one and a half minutes of play, but this derby was nevertheless calmer than feared, at least before and during the 90 minutes. Hannover missed the jump to third place due to the draw.

At the top of the table after the eighth matchday is SC Paderborn, who missed numerous chances against Regensburg. Nevertheless, it was enough for the season’s sixth home win in a row.

KSC missed out on a place in the top flight, while Heidenheim have now scored in seven of their last eight league games. In an even first half at the Wildpark, scoring chances were scarce. The best chance came from Karlsruhe striker Fabian Schleusener, who only hit the outside of the net in the 44th minute. Typical for the first half: The goal would not have counted anyway because of an offside position. There was no goal in the second 45 minutes either.

Over 26,000 spectators watch Fortuna win

In the evening, there was the duel between Fortuna Düsseldorf and Hansa Rostock. Fortuna won 3:1 and climbed to 4th place in the table.

In front of 26,719 spectators, Düsseldorf were rewarded early on for their committed opening phase. Tim Oberdorf played a dream pass out of midfield to Kownacki, who fired the ball into the net with a technically adept direct shot – his fifth goal of the season.

Spurred on by this, Fortuna went on and had full control of the game against Rostock, who were far too passive. Sobottka deservedly increased the lead after a beautiful one-two with the very eye-catching Kownacki.

After the break, the picture did not change at all. Until Rostock sensed their chance out of nowhere through Fröde’s header. But then wild card Iyoha, who had replaced Kownacki six minutes earlier, was on hand to score.
