Hammer SpVg were able to start the Westfalenliga 1 with an exclamation mark. After the 5:2 victory over SV RW Deuten, sporting director Holger Wortmann was visibly satisfied. But the game threatened to tip over at one point: “We got into the game very well and deserved to lead 1-0 at the break. The shortcoming was clearly that we didn’t lead by much more. Shortly after half-time, we lost the thread for 20 minutes and begged to concede goals. In this phase, the quality of Deuten was noticeable and they were able to turn the game around.”
In the final phase, however, Hamm was able to take the game back. “We benefited from the second drinking break, where the coach tweaked one or two things. After that, we were able to build on the first half and created more chances. In the end, we deserved to win,” said Wortmann, assessing the opening match.
Duel for relegation should bring something countable
This weekend will see the Oberliga relegated team face off against TuS Haltern. Wortmann does not want to underestimate the opponent despite an opening defeat against SpVgg Erkenschwick: “They certainly have a certain individual quality. I’m thinking of Peter Elbers, who is the lynchpin and the player most likely to score. Haltern has committed and well-trained boys who gave everything in Erkenschwick.”
The 55-year-old’s target for the match is rather cautious: “It will be a hot game that we are looking forward to. Last season we were able to take four points against Haltern. I’d be happy if we could build on that and bring home some points again. “
After difficult years, peace returns to Hamm
Three difficult seasons lie behind the Spielvereinigung. “We didn’t win a game for two years and only didn’t get relegated because of the Corona situation. For us it was great that we were competitive last season. We could have avoided relegation in the end, we dropped too many points,” Wortmann is annoyed.
But the sporting director is very satisfied with the recent development: “We know that we are a team that can play football. The coaching team did an excellent job in preparation and adapted the system to the new players. Therefore, we believe we are in for a quiet season. We want to consolidate ourselves sportingly and see which screws we need to turn in the future in order to then aim for higher goals. “
