Perfect – Hecking takes over as coach

VfL Bochum has chosen its savior. Dieter Hecking is tasked with achieving the next miracle to keep the club in the league.

VfL Bochum has a new head coach. Dieter Hecking is taking over from Peter Zeidler, who has been suspended. The club confirmed on Monday what had been reported on Sunday.

He will initially sign a contract until the end of the current season. He is to be officially presented at a press conference on Tuesday.

Markus Feldhoff, who took over the team on an interim basis after Zeidler’s departure, will take on other, as yet undefined, roles within the club. This also means that Hecking will probably bring his own assistants with him.

He is taking on a Herculean task in Bochum, as VfL are still waiting for their first competitive win. They were knocked out of the DFB Cup in the first round by second division side Jahn Regensburg, and VfL are lagging far behind in the league.

After nine matchdays, they are already seven points behind the relegation spot in 16th place. And now they face difficult matches against Bayer Leverkusen, VfB Stuttgart, and FC Augsburg.

There are easier starting programs for a coach taking over the last-place team in the Bundesliga. But Hecking fits perfectly into the profile communicated by the club for the new coach. Experience in the Bundesliga is important, and the new coach must be able to shake up the team and, above all, identify with the task at hand. Because it could hardly be more difficult than it is right now.
