Rot-Weiß Oberhausen could not manage more than a 0-0 draw against SSVg Velbert on matchday 5 of the Regionalliga West. Coach Sebastian Gunkel was not satisfied with the result. In terms of performance, Rot-Weiß Oberhausen could not be faulted on matchday 5 of the Regionalliga West against SSVg Velbert. Only the team’s finishing under coach Sebastian Gunkel seemed to be jinxed. The Kleeblätter dominated the newly promoted Velbert side for 90 minutes, allowing them hardly any chances and creating numerous opportunities themselves. The only thing missing for Oberhausen was a goal. The RWO coach agreed.“At the end of the day, we came up against a compact opponent, but we had a lot of possession. We conceded very little, to mention the positive aspects of our defensive work,” Gunkel summed up. “From our point of view, we tried everything, shifted the game and got in behind them down the wings. I think we played with a lot of pressure and had the chances to score.”
The only shortcoming, and at the same time the biggest difficulty, was converting the chances into goals. Velbert didn’t give Oberhausen much space, but their own expectations were much higher than a goalless draw.
“We and those around us are aware of this, which is why it’s so disappointing that we didn’t manage to score a goal. We should have won the game 2-0 or 3-0, but to do that you have to score goals,” explained Gunkel. “Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to do that, which is a shame. Of course, there’s a lot of frustration, but we have to accept that.“
On the visitors’ side, Velbert coach Ismail Jaroui and his team celebrated the point like a victory. As the game progressed, it became increasingly clear that the newly promoted team would not be leaving the pitch as winners. The coach therefore opted for ”results-oriented football” and did everything he could to secure the draw.
“At the start of the game, we opted for a footballing approach. We wanted to play from the back, and that was the plan. However, Oberhausen did well to close us down, and as a result, we couldn’t get a foothold in the game,” explained Jaroui. “We’re very happy with the point because we had the necessary bit of luck, which has been missing in recent weeks.”
