Preußen Münster climbs to third place and seals Freiburg’s relegation

Preußen Münster have claimed the relegation place in the 3rd division. On the other side, the first team to be relegated has been confirmed.

After two defeats in the 3rd division against the top teams from Regensburg and Ulm, Preußen Münster are back on track. A 2:0 (1:0) win against bottom-of-the-table Freiburg II in the sold-out Preußen-Stadion.

With consequences on both sides. The Prussians climbed back up to third place and can continue to dream of making it through. SCP are three points ahead of Dynamo Dresden. In the catch-up match on Wednesday, 1. FC Saarbrücken and Rot-Weiss Essen have the chance to close the gap to Münster to two and one points respectively with a three-pointer). The visitors from Breisgau, on the other hand, have also been mathematically relegated to the Regionalliga following their defeat.

The game started like a dream for Münster after their last two defeats. Goalscorer Joel Grodowski scored after just six minutes to make it 1:0 after a bad mistake in the Freiburg defense, which Grodowski only had to push in from a few meters out.

The Prussians continued to dominate the game, with coach Sascha Hildmann’s team also creating chances, but no further goals were scored in the first half.

The game faded after the break, with little constructive play from either side. Danger arose – if at all – only from resting balls. The game was almost decided in the 73rd minute, but Prussia attacker Malik Batmaz failed to hit the post. Three minutes later, Batmaz was on hand to score. The 2:0 meant the game was decided.

Münster continue their campaign on Saturday (April 27, 2 p.m.) at Viktoria Köln. Freiburg will face SSV Ulm 1846 on Sunday (April 28, 4:30 p.m.).
