1st FC Düren have made a dream start in the Regionalliga West. After three games, the promoted team is fourth, but coach Brunetto remains modest.
While the other newcomers SG Wattenscheid 09 and 1. FC Bocholt had to pay a lot of dues after their promotion to the Regionalliga West and Bocholt even had their first coaching change of the season, 1. FC Düren had a perfect start.
After three games, the promoted team is in third place with seven points and is still unbeaten. “Of course we feel really good,” coach Giuseppe Brunetto is also enjoying the success and the mood of the Düreners. “But when you start the season so well, it’s also easy to feel good.”
Is the coach himself surprised by the strong start? “I was hoping for it, but I am also a realist and know that all three games were close and could have tipped to the other side. Especially against Mönchengladbach, we were perhaps a little lucky to get the three points,” admits Brunetto with a view to the first games. Against Borussia’s U23s, Vincent Geimer only made the victory perfect in the 87th minute.
Crisis-ridden Straelen as next opponent
And yet the Düreners took their points in all these close duels. “The team has a certain greed to win every game. The mentality is right, no duel is given away,” Brunetto analyses the strengths of his team. Nevertheless, the objective remains modest for the promoted team, and no one wants to take off after three games. “That’s a good way to keep collecting points in the league and reach our goal early. That still remains just to stay in the league.”
The next task for Brunetto’s side has seen the exact opposite start. So far, SV Straelen are waiting for their first point of the new season, losing to Kaan-Marienborn in a make-up game on Wednesday night. “I think this will be a game of equals. We expect an opponent who is desperate to score at home. But we’re also going there to get a three-pointer and hopefully we’ll take something at the weekend as well,” said the promotion coach, looking ahead to next Saturday’s match (13 August, 2pm) at the Stadion an der Römerstraße.
