Pyro and celebrations after Turkey’s victory at Borsigplatz – what the police say

After Turkey’s opening victory, Turkish supporters celebrated at Borsigplatz despite constant rain. This is what the police say.

Turkey made a successful start to the European Championships with a 3:1 (1:1) win against Georgia in Dortmund. As expected, 50,000 supporters of “Milli Takim” made the game against the European Championship newcomers a home game.

Hours before kick-off, the supporters transformed Dortmund’s city center into a huge party mile. The fan march to the stadium, in which, according to the police, 1,500 Turks took part, was peaceful apart from the setting off of pyrotechnics.

At around 4 p.m., the heavy rain that lasted for hours caused a cold shower. Otherwise, the celebrations after the victory would probably have been much more extensive. Nevertheless, there were spontaneous honking concerts in Dortmund. There was another spontaneous fan walk in front of the main station.

And Borsigplatz, the birthplace of BVB, was also briefly paralyzed by cheering Turks. Despite the renewed use of pyrotechnics, the Dortmund police’s assessment was positive. In their final report, they spoke of event-typical offenses in connection with pyrotechnics

“The majority of fans behaved peacefully today and celebrated exuberantly. Pyrotechnics were occasionally set off during the fan walks. Several criminal proceedings were initiated. In the opinion of the police, however, the closure of the fan zones was not the reason for this behavior,” the police wrote late Tuesday evening. “During the match between Turkey and Georgia, it also remained peaceful in and around the stadium and in the city center. Before kick-off, there was a confrontation between Turkish and Georgian fan groups in the stadium. The police intervened immediately and separated the parties.”

Her conclusion: “In the post-match phase, Turkish fans gathered for spontaneous fan marches on Dortmund’s Wallring (approx. 1500 participants) and on Borsigplatz (approx. 200 participants). Emergency services immediately accompanied the fans. Disruptions for bystanders were kept to a minimum,” they explained. “Here, too, there were typical criminal offenses in connection with pyrotechnics. Criminal proceedings were initiated. Traffic came to a standstill at times.”

For the most part, however, the atmosphere before and after the match was very peaceful. This was also praised by the police
