Red Earth conversion delayed – BVB with more home matches “in exile

Borussia Dortmund II will have to play some home games outside Dortmund in 2023 as well. The reconstruction of the Red Earth Stadium is delayed.

In 2022, Borussia Dortmund’s second team had to move to the Stadion am Zoo for the three home matches against MSV Duisburg, SC Verl and Viktoria Köln.

The BVB II home stadium “Rote Erde” is currently being rebuilt. The good news: BVB II won two of these aforementioned games away from home – 2:0 against Duisburg, 1:0 against Verl. The bad news: The Dortmunders will also have to play some matches “in exile” in Wuppertal in 2023.

The first home match against VfL Osnabrück on 21 January will take place in Wuppertal, report the “Ruhr Nachrichten”. This is because the renovation work at the Rote-erde-Stadion has been delayed.

Note

According to the “Ruhr Nachrichten”, it will not be possible to play in the Rote Erde stadium before the beginning of February, which would be eleven months after the start of the renovation work. So BVB also seems to be considering a “home game” against 1. FC Saarbrücken on 11 February 2023 in Wuppertal.

The original plan was that a return to the Rote Erde could take place in the summer of 2022. But even then, the work had already been delayed.

According to the “Ruhr Nachrichten”, there were seven stadiums to choose from for the three home matches: Paderborn, Duisburg, Essen, Wuppertal, Münster, Osnabrück and Lotte. The decision fell on Wuppertal.
