Regensburg is on the rise and can pull ahead without a striker

Jahn Regensburg wants to continue its upward trend at Schalke 04. Bayern could pull ahead.

Jahn Regensburg has been in dismal form for much of the season so far. Bad news for upcoming opponent Schalke 04: SSV is now on the rise.

After the heavy defeat against 1. FC Nürnberg just under two weeks ago, coach Joe Enochs had to leave. Under interim coach Andreas Patz, things are looking up again. So much so that Regensburg could even overtake Schalke if they win Sunday’s match at the Veltins-Arena (1:30 p.m., RS live ticker).

Regensburg is currently two points behind S04 in last place in the table. Schalke could slip into this position if they lose and Eintracht Braunschweig (17th) gets at least one point in their home game against Hamburger SV.

What Regensburg has certainly achieved since Patz took over is that they are playing much more consistently. In the two competitive games under the interim coach, there have been two 1-0 wins. In the league against SV Elversberg and in the DFB Cup against Greuther Fürth. In the three games before that, Jahn conceded 14 goals.

“I’m proud of the team. But we would do well to keep our feet on the ground and be aware of the situation we’re in. We’ve kept in touch in the table and are within striking distance. Now we need to work hard and, above all, stay focused,” said Patz after the win against Elversberg.

At Schalke, on the other hand, the change of coach to Kees van Wonderen has had little effect. The Royal Blues have picked up just one point from their three second division games under his leadership. In the 0-0 draw in Ulm, they kept a clean sheet for the first time this season. However, the offense was once again disappointing across the board.

Now Regensburg want to take advantage of Schalke’s crisis. However, they will have to do without Dejan Galjen. The striker, who has made four appearances this season, was sent off last weekend and is suspended for the Schalke game.
