Jahn Regensburg wants to continue its upward trend at Schalke 04. Bayern could overtake them.
Jahn Regensburg has been in a desolate state for much of the season so far. This is bad news for their upcoming opponents Schalke 04, as the SSV is now on an upward trend.
After the mega-slap against 1. FC Nürnberg almost two weeks ago, coach Joe Enochs had to go. Under interim coach Andreas Patz, things are looking up again. So much so that Regensburg could even overtake Schalke if they win the clash on Sunday in the Veltins-Arena (1:30 p.m., RS live ticker).
Before that, Regensburg were two points behind S04 in last place in the table. Schalke could drop to bottom place if they lose and if Eintracht Braunschweig (17th) get at least a point in their home game against Hamburger SV.
Since Patz took over, the Regensburg team has become much more stable, winning both of their competitive matches under the interim coach – 1-0 against SV Elversberg in the league and against Greuther Fürth in the DFB Cup – after conceding 14 goals in their three previous matches.
“I’m proud of the team. But we’d be wise to keep our feet on the ground and remember what our situation is. We’ve closed the gap in the table and are in contention. Now we have to work hard and, above all, stay focused,” said Patz after the win against Elversberg.
Schalke, on the other hand, have not seen any effect from the change of coach to Kees van Wonderen. The Royal Blues have only managed to get one point out of the three second division games under his direction. At least they kept a clean sheet for the first time this season in the 0-0 draw in Ulm. But the offense was disappointing across the board once again.
Now Regensburg want to take advantage of Schalke’s crisis. They will have to do so without Dejan Galjen. The attacker, who has made four appearances this season, was sent off last weekend and is missing against Schalke through suspension.
