Regular player has extended his contract with RWE

Rot-Weiss Essen has extended the contract with a regular player. That’s what the players say.

Until a few days ago, nine players at third-division club Rot-Weiss Essen were still without a contract from the summer of 2024. Now there are seven players who could still have a future in Essen. After keeper Felix Wienand, regular Torben Müsel has now also extended his contract at Hafenstrasse.

Seven because it is certain that Fabian Rüth, Björn Rother and Sandro Plechaty will not receive a new offer.

Back to Müsel: On Monday, the club announced what this editorial team had already announced on March 20. Florian Schalk, Torben Müsel’s advisor, told Forecasting at the time: “Torben is held in high esteem by those in charge at Rot-Weiss Essen and we, in turn, greatly appreciate that. The talks are going well and we are confident that we will find a solution.”

This has now been found, with the midfielder signing a new contract until June 30, 2026. Marcus Steegmann, Director of Professional Football at RWE, said: “Torben has made a huge leap since joining Rot-Weiss Essen. With his development from an attacking player to a central midfielder, he has become an important part of our game thanks to his overview, calmness and technique when playing with the ball. Nevertheless, we are convinced that he still has plenty of potential for development. We are therefore delighted to continue on this path together and to maintain continuity and planning security in central midfield with the extension.”

Essen’s appreciation can be seen in his appearances alone. In the league and in the Lower Rhine Cup, he made 34 appearances, scoring five goals and providing three assists.

After signing, Müsel explained: “I feel comfortable at Hafenstraße with all these emotional fans behind me and I’m happy with my development. I like the slightly more defensive position and the associated responsibility of looking for playful solutions. Extending my contract was therefore the logical consequence for me.”
