SC Freiburg II can play freely at Rot-Weiss Essen on Saturday (2 pm). The Breisgau team is playing a very strong season.
Before the season, many teams were named when it came to the top places in the 3. Liga. Two were not among them, those of SV Elversberg and SC Freiburg’s U23.
It is precisely these two teams that now lead the table – by a clear margin. Elversberg can make it into the 2nd Bundesliga, but Freiburg II is not allowed to move up.
Therefore, the U23 of coach Thomas Stamm can play freely, the season is already more than successful. On Saturday (2 p.m.), the team travels to Hafenstraße to face Rot-Weiss Essen.
RWE will have fond memories of the first leg, as the 3-0 away win was their first away treble of the season. It was one of only four defeats for Freiburg – and that after 29 games played. This is a great result, and Freiburg are also very dangerous away from home.
After 14 games, they have seven wins, four draws and three defeats away from home. In general, no team has managed to beat the SCF in twelve matches.
Stamm emphasised on the Freiburg homepage before the match at the Hafenstraße stadium: “We are looking forward to another match in front of a big crowd and at such a traditional club. These encounters are always fun and that’s what distinguishes the 3rd division. “
All the more reason for us to show that we’ve moved on and that we’re back with the necessary grip and intensity.

Just like the density of the league, a lot is still possible at the top and bottom, even a relegation of RWE after recent weak performances. Stamm on the opponents: “RWE have a good tempo. We’ll see how they do against the ball. Basically, we want to put all our focus on ourselves.”
Stamm will have to do without, among others, his absolute regular Philipp Treu in Essen, the right-back is missing due to a yellow suspension. Oskar Wiklöf and Julian Guttau cannot play. Yannik Engelhardt is back on board after his suspension.
Looking back at the first leg, Stamm and his team have a lot to make up for against RWE: “We lacked a lot of the things that usually characterise us. All the more reason for us to show that we’ve moved on and that we have the necessary grip and intensity again.
