Compared to the Bundesliga, Schalke 04’s TV money revenue is down by 22.7 million euros. League-wide, one club collects more than S04.
The 2nd Bundesliga is also associated with financial cuts for Schalke 04 – that is no secret. Especially in terms of TV money, the Gelsenkirchen club will have to make big cuts in the coming season. According to calculations by the sports magazine Kicker, only about 200 million euros will be paid out to the 18 second-division clubs from the marketing revenues of the German Football League (DFL).
Schalke, for example, will receive only 21.5 million euros in TV money for the coming season. That is less than half the amount that S04 still earned in the Bundesliga. Schalke 04 received exactly 44,230,087 euros in the past season.
In the 2nd Bundesliga, however, Schalke 04 is among the league leaders with its 21.5 million euros in TV revenue. Only fellow relegated Hertha BSC (24.1 million euros) receives more money from the DFL. Hamburger SV receives the third most from the TV money pot in a league comparison with 18.9 million euros.
The TV money is distributed according to a four-pillar principle. The largest pillar is the “equal distribution”, which guarantees all second division teams income of 7.2 million euros. In addition, the performance of the teams in previous years is also rewarded. On the basis of two five-year evaluations (one for the 2nd division only, one for the Bundesliga and 2nd division throughout) and a ten-year evaluation, further millions are distributed. The training and use of talent as well as fan interest measured by spectator numbers are also taken into account when distributing the TV money.
