Rot-Weiss Essen are already planning beyond the summer and have now extended a contract.
In the final days of the summer transfer period, Rot-Weiss Essen signed Andreas Wiegel on 30 August after the false start to the 3. Liga.
A good decision, as it has turned out so far. The right-back, who previously played for BFC Dynamo, immediately became a reinforcement for RWE. He initially signed until the end of the season.
Now the contract has been extended until 30 June 2025. “Since his signing in late summer, Andreas Wiegel has shown what we expected from him. He plays with a lot of courage and dynamism and has thus become an absolute pillar in our team. Through his style of play, he always manages to carry away his teammates and our fans. Therefore, he is a perfect fit for Hafenstraße. With Andy’s extension, we are tying down an important cornerstone of our team for the next few years,” emphasised RWE sports director Jörn Nowak.
Wiegel has played ten times in the 3rd Division so far, most recently against Halleschen FC, where he had to be substituted with a concussion. However, he was able to sit on the bench again as a wild card in the following game against SC Verl.
After signing, he said: “I feel very comfortable at Hafenstraße, I get on very well with my team-mates and the coaching staff, and I’m thrilled by the power coming from the stands. Accordingly, I didn’t have to hesitate for long when it came to signing a new employment contract.”
The contract now runs until 2025, and the next game is already on Friday. RWE will then face leaders SV Elversberg in the opening game of the second half of the Third League season. And they will have to show a different face than they did in the 1:5 defeat in the first leg – but Wiegel was not involved in that game.
